The Medieval Fair of Capdepera (from 19th-21st May) takes place every May. This is a place which allows us to go back in time and discover an authentic, medieval, Majorcan city, with cobbled streets covered in straw, stalls constructed out of wood and cloth making it seem like you are buying handcrafted products and items from past times, braids, bastions and banners floating in the breeze from the balconies and dances manifested in all different colours in the moat of the town’s grand castle.
Visiting Capdepera during this medieval festival is one of those experiences you have to live at least once in your life because it is one of the most interesting of its kind; in terms of culture, history and gastronomy. During this time, visitors have the opportunity to try the most authentic Majorcan delicacies at the best price.
The unique charm of this small Majorcan town named Capdepera (which means head of a pear in Spanish which recognises the type of pear that sits on the hill that surrounds the grand castle), adds to the wide range of stalls that participate in this reenactment of what life was like during this medieval period.
Now, Capdepera is a tourist site in lots of ways, above all because it is strategically located between two holidays attractions: Artà and Cala Ratjada and so entices tourists to experience something interesting and different. Because of this, every year there are more crowds during the fair and even more craftsmen, chefs and farmers taking up post along the streets which are accurately decorated in this medieval style.
Every year, for example, the amount of stands increases to more than 150, all offering something different: from the typical ‘panades’ and chorizo, to kebab and vegetarian dishes, to ceramic and leather handcrafted items, traditional fabrics and Majorcan baskets or signs.
One of the main attractions of the festival, other than the market, are the performances, workshops and shows that take place in different zones of the town: Music, horse shows, exhibitions of agricultural tools, regional dances, parades, “demon” spectacles and songs that are added to the improvised parties that the visitors themselves organise in any corner of the town, offering out typical Majorcan herbs and liquor with unique flavours.
